Un islamiste armé tué par les forces de sécurité algériennes le 7 octobre à El Bayadh dans le Sud-ouest algérien et identifié comme étant Mourad Louzaï, était un haut responsable d’Al-Qaïda au Maghreb islamique (AQMI), a indiqué dimanche une source sécuritaire.

Les services secrets géorgiens aident les émissaires d’Al-Qaïda à infiltrer des terroristes en Tchétchénie et au Daghestan, a annoncé mardi lors d’une réunion du Comité antiterroriste national son président Alexandre Bortnikov, directeur du Service fédéral de sécurité (FSB).

Les pirates somaliens sous l’emprise du crime organisé
Le piratage au large des côtes somaliennes est contrôlé par la criminalité organisée attirée par la perspective de fortes rançons, ont souligné mercredi des représentants d’Interpol en marge de la 78e Assemblée générale de l’organisation internationale réunie à Singapour.

Espagne: Des mercenaires sur les thoniers
Plusieurs thoniers espagnols opérant à partir des Seychelles ont embarqué des ex-militaires britanniques pour les protéger des pirates au large de la Somalie, selon le quotidien El Pais d’aujourd’hui. Cette décision a été prise à la suite du refus du gouvernement espagnol d’embarquer des militaires sur ces bateaux, alors que des fusiliers marins français protègent des chalutiers français et ont repoussé plusieurs attaques.
Huit chalutiers espagnols immatriculés aux Seychelles qui ont embarqué d’anciens soldats britanniques, notamment des Gurkhas d’origine népalaise, qui seraient fournis par la société anglaise de sécurité Minimal Risk.

Un oligarque russe soupçonné de blanchiment d’argent de la mafia en Espagne
L’oligarque russe Oleg Deripaska est soupçonné par la justice d’avoir blanchi 4 millions d’euros pour le compte de la mafia russe en Espagne entre 2001 et 2004, a affirmé dimanche le quotidien El Mundo, ce que l’homme d’affaires a qualifié de « malentendu» .

Neuf corps en morceaux retrouvés dans le sud du Mexique
La police mexicaine a retrouvé jeudi soir neuf corps masculins découpés en morceaux dans 18 sacs en plastique noir placés à l’intérieur d’une camionnette dans l’État de Guerrero, a-t-on appris vendredi auprès des forces de l’ordre.

Afghanistan may well be this generation’s Viet-Nam, and the poster child for lessons not learned.  We still cannot do warning, we still cannot connect the dots, we still have no moral grounding (love dictators, hate freedom fighters if they are not ours), and we still have no strategy.  It is all connected. Our blind support for Israel on its continuing genocidal actions in Palestine; our blind support for Karzai a world-class thief with a drug lord brother; and our relatively blind support for an ungodly combination of Pakistani military profitting from heroin production and Indian military hell-bent on attracting Al Qaeda deep into India, in combination make no sense at all.

Hacker’s extradition put on hold
A Briton accused of hacking into secret military and Nasa computers has had his extradition to the US put on hold as new psychiatric evidence is considered. Glasgow-born Gary McKinnon, 42, was denied permission to appeal to the Supreme Court against his removal.  He then had 14 days to appeal to the European Court, but the Home Office has agreed to consider new evidence and has put that 14-day deadline on hold.

Trouble at Caijing
It looks as if rumours of a staff revolt at China’s biggest and most influential business magazine, Caijing, are true (more reports here and here). It has been noted in the Australian media that the Lowy Institute had organised a conference with Caijing, to be held in Sydney in September. I also reported in July that we had started an online collaboration with Caijing, with Interpreter articles appearing regularly on Caijing’s blog.

North Korea gulags ‘hold 150,000′
North Korea still runs six prison camps holding 154,000 political prisoners, a South Korean lawmaker has said. Yoon Sang-hyun, of the ruling Grand National Party, said inmates worked long hours in return for meagre food rations, reported Yonhap news agency.

• États-Unis
‘Twin towers’ warship sets sail
A ship built of salvaged steel from the World Trade Center is to be reunited with the city it was named after. The USS New York embarked on its maiden voyage on Tuesday from Louisiana, where it was built, and is set to arrive in New York harbour on 2 November. The warship will be welcomed by a formal ceremony to honour those killed in the 11 September 2001 attacks, which destroyed the World Trade Center.

Guinea’s leader misses deadline
Guinea’s military leader Capt Moussa Dadis Camara has postponed an announcement on whether he will stand in next year’s presidential election. The African Union had given him until midnight on Saturday to formally promise he would not participate.

India state changes madrasa rules
Madrasas or traditional Islamic religious schools in the Indian state of West Bengal are to switch to English as the medium of instruction. The programme will be introduced in phases, state Minority Affairs Minister Abdus Sattar announced.

Guns given to Somali quiz winners
The winners of a quiz organised by Somali Islamists have been given weapons and ammunition as prizes. Prizes included AK-47 assault rifles, hand grenades and an anti-tank mine.
The quiz ran during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan in the port city of Kismayo, and included questions about the Koran and Somali geography.

Boat people a symptom of Sri Lanka’s dark side
In the months following the Sri Lankan Government’s declaration that the 26-year civil war was officially over, footage of alleged extra-judicial killings by Sri Lankan soldiers trickled out. The living conditions of some 280,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), forcibly held without justification in the country’s northern provinces, also rapidly deteriorated.
It therefore comes as no surprise that the 260 Sri Lankan asylum-seekers who were intercepted en route to Christmas Island last night showed preference for suicide rather than return to a country that has no regard for justice.
